For Your Pets

Make sure your furry friends are cared for in the event of an emergency.

Build a Kit

In addition to the supplies listed on the general Make a Plan page, think about the following:

  • Food: Keep at least three days of food in an airtight, waterproof container.

  • Water: Store at least three days of water specifically for your pets in addition to the water for your family.

  • Medicine: Keep an extra supply of any medicines your pets need in a waterproof container.

  • First Aid Kit: Talk to your vet to see what is needed for a first aid kit specifically for your animals.

  • Collar with ID Tag and Leash: Your pet should always wear a collar with an ID and its rabies tag, but make sure you have an extra in case of an emergency. Also keep any important information like medical records or adoption papers in a waterproof container.

  • Crate: Be sure you have a container to transport your pet in case you need to evacuate.

  • Sanitation: Include litter and a litter box, if necessary, newspapers, paper towels, trash bags, and bleach to clean up any messes.

  • Picture of You and Your Pet Together: In case you are separated and need help finding your pet.

  • Toys: Have a familiar toy on hand to comfort your pet and reduce stress.

Make a Plan

  • If you need to evacuate, do not leave your pet behind!

  • Make a plan that includes your pet, and create a buddy system so a neighbor or someone else can help with your pet if something goes wrong.

  • Talk to your vet about your emergency plan, and consider permanent identification, like a microchip, in case you and your pet are separated.

  • Have the important contact information on hand, including Rutland Area Disaster Animal Response Team (RADART). Their number is (802) 665-7913.

  • Obtain a "pets inside" sticker for your front window in case there's a fire and you aren't home to save them.
