Families

If you have a family, you need to take extra measures to ensure their safety in an emergency.

Make a Plan

  • Make sure you make an emergency plan

with your children. You can make it fun! Sit them down with pizza and talk about what they should do in different scenarios.

  • Give your children the important emergency contact

information before an emergency strikes so they know what to do.

Helping Them Cope

No matter how prepared you are, disasters

can still be traumatic for children.

Here are tips to help them cope:

  • Limit TV Time: Protect them from the intense media coverage

  • Talk: Listen to what they are concerned about and talk with them about it. Tell them that they are your top priority.

  • Keep Calm: Kids learn by example. Keep them calm by keeping calm yourself.

  • Routine: Help your kids return to normal routine as quickly as possible.

Build a Kit

In addition to the supplies on the general Make a Plan page, you may want to include the following:

If you have a baby:

  • Formula

  • Diapers

  • Bottles

  • Powdered Milk

  • Medications

  • Moist Towelettes

  • Diaper Rash Ointment

If you have small children:

  • Comfort Items: Stuffed animals, doll, pacifier, blanket

  • Personal Hygiene: Baby wipes

  • Activities: Books, puzzles, games
