Disaster and Emergency Planning
People with Access and Functional Needs
If you have a disability or other special needs, you may need to take extra measures to ensure your safety in an emergency.
Make a Plan
-
Create a personal support network
to ensure that someone will check up on you in an
emergency. Prepare for power loss, which may make communications difficult.
-
Think about what disasters you may need to respond to. In Rutland, this may be a hurricane, snow storm, or forest fire, to name a few threats. You should also prepare for personal emergencies, like fires or floods.
-
If you have service animals, make sure you have a plan for them in the event of an evacuation.
-
If you recieve regular medical care, make sure you and your provider have a plan to continue care in a range of emergencies.
Build a Kit
In addition to the supplies listed on the general
Make a Plan page, think about the following:
-
Medical needs: Prepare to be cut off for three days to a week and think about what your needs require.
-
Important Documents: If you rely on any operating equipment or lifesaving devices, include those with the important documents in your kit. If you have a communications disability, include information about how to communicate with you. Also have a copy of your medical providers contact information and important prescriptions. Keep these documents in a waterproof container.
-
Batteries: Include extra batteries for any equipment you need. For example, batteries for a hearing aid or a motor operated wheelchair. If you use a motor operated wheelchair, have a lightweight manual one prepared as well in case of an emergency.
-
Service Animals: Have a supply of food and water for your service animals.
